A Beginner's Guide to Knitting Retreats

Written by Sam

Do you have questions about attending a retreat for the first time? Or not sure if it is for you? This post will give you an outline of what you can expect at a retreat and don’t forget you can email us or post questions in our Ravelry group and we’ll be happy to answer them.

Part 1: Before the retreat
Our Single Rooms are all sold out, leaving only Twin Rooms available on-site. So you might be unsure about sharing a room with someone you have never met. It’s a common worry, but we can help. If you didn’t request a specific roommate, we will send you a roommate questionnaire so we can match you up with a roommate. We’ll let you know before the retreat who you will be sharing with. We encourage you to message them to get to know a little bit about each other.

If a shared room is not for you, we’d suggest signing up as a Non-Residential Attendee (you’ll get everything that the on-site attendees receive other than a place to sleep). Then you can book a room at a hotel or B&B in the area. We’ll share a post here on the website in a couple of weeks with recommendations for other places to stay in Edinburgh.

Part 2: Arriving
At least one of us will be there to greet you when you arrive, even if you are late! That way we can make sure you know where everything is and show you to your room. Don’t feel that you need to socialise straight away if you are tired or feel rushed. There are plenty of quiet places at the retreat centre, inside and out, where you can gather yourself or have a rest. We’ll be sharing a contact phone number with you before the retreat so you can contact us the day of with any arrival questions or to let us know you’ll be arriving later than you expected.

Part 3: Meeting the attendees
You may arrive alone or at the same time as other people. If you’re sharing a room, we will be available to introduce you to your roommate. Everyone will have a name badge, so you can see at a glance who everyone is. If you’d prefer not to have photos of yourself taken, your badge lanyard will be a different colour so that everyone will be able to immediately see who doesn’t want photos taken. If you feel overwhelmed at this point, the quiet places I wrote about above will always be available. And remember, we all like to talk about our knitting!

Part 4: During the retreat
The aim is for everyone to have a relaxing, fun, knitting break. If you get stir crazy, there are lots of great places near the retreat centre to have coffee or visit. C.C. and Damaris will post a guide to the local area next week. Edinburgh is a great city! We won’t mind if you decide to escape to the city for a while for some sightseeing. There may well be other attendees who’d love to join you. Alternatively, you may just want to sit and knit quietly for the whole retreat. That’s fine too. Yay for knitting!

All meals are provided for all attendees. Seats aren’t reserved but there is plenty of space for everyone. If you let us know about dietary concerns, we will be working with the catering staff of the retreat centre to make sure your needs are met.

We’ll be in touch at the end of August about your classes. If you expressed interest in taking more than 1 class, that will be your chance to confirm that with us. If there are additional spaces left in any of the classes, we may open those spaces to the general public. So make sure and get back to us within a week of the end of August email to make sure you get the class(es) you want.

We’ve been blown away by the support of the fibre world for our retreat. We have lots of door prizes and things for our goodie bags including coupon codes and patterns that we can’t wait to share with you.

Please let us know if you have any questions or problems during the retreat and we will answer them and/or try to resolve them as soon as possible.

As we get closer to the date there may be opportunities to help with registration, the vendor market, and other things. We’ll let you know via the Ravelry group, this blog, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Part 5: The Vendor Market
Attendees get first dibs on the goodies from the great vendors who will be selling their gorgeous wares! If you haven’t seen the list of vendors, check it out here. If you have friends in the area, why not meet them for the afternoon public opening of the marketplace as well. The vendor market will be open to the public from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, 31-October, for a fee of £3 per person or a donation of a knitted or crocheted item which we’ll donate to charity.

Part 6: The sad bit
Saying goodbye! We hope that you will have had a fantastic time and can’t wait to come back again. Don’t forget that we will still be on Ravelry and you can message us whenever you want. We’ll also be sending out a questionnaire after the retreat, where we welcome any comments you may have about our time together!

Hopefully that gives you a good overview of what to expect at the retreat. If you haven’t signed up to attend the retreat yet, go here immediately to sign up! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at GeekyPuffinKnitPalooza@gmail.com or post in our Ravelry group.

We are so excited to meet each of you in person in just a little over 3 months! Happy Knitting!

BADGES!

Every time I hear the words BADGES, I think of the famous movie line, "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!". But maybe this time we do!

We've created every conceivable combination that we could think of, but if we missed one, let us know and we'll get one done for you.

There are two sizes: small for places like Ravelry (your profile pic) and social media AND large for blogs, websites, etc. Just right click on the image you want, save it to your computer, and then upload it to the correct place.

If you're putting it on your blog or website, it'd be fabulous if you could link it to our website http://GeekyPuffinKnitPalooza.com so others can find us easily. Alright, here are the BADGES!

SMALL - social media profile pic sized

LARGE - for blogs, websites, etc. - click the image for an even larger size

Hope you enjoy these fun BADGES! Come back on Monday for a fun blog post about what it's like to attend a knitting retreat! Happy Knitting!

Tell Me About the 2015 Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza

So, you might be asking yourself, what exactly is the Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza (GPKP)? Simply, it's a knitting retreat being held in Edinburgh, Scotland, at The Gillis Centre, starting on Thursday, 29-October-2015, and running through, Sunday, 1-November-2015.

Want to know more? Then keep reading.

Who are the hosts of the GPKP?
There are three hosts of the GPKP. C.C. and Damaris Almon are a Mamma/daughter duo based in Edinburgh, Scotland, who co-host the weekly video podcast Geeky Girls Knit. C.C. is also a knitwear designer (her company is JavaPurl Designs). Damaris is a sophomore in high school (we're from Texas and since she's homeschooled, for various reasons, we chose to stay with the US school system set-up). Sam Boggia is based in London, England, and is the host for the video podcast KnitRunDig. She is also the owner and maker of KnitRunDig knitting project bags.

How did the GPKP get it's name?
When the 3 of us decided we wanted to host a knitting retreat, we thought it would be fun to try to combine our podcast names to come up with a name. However, Geeky and KnitRunDig just didn't work for us. Inspiration struck when we thought about Sam's love for puffins. And with that, the Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza got it's name.

What are the main event components of the GPKP?
There are so many things we have planned, but the big events will be: classes (every attendee gets 1 class included with their fee + a bonus class that will be open to every attendee), a 3 shop yarn crawl, a Vendor Market on site at the retreat centre, opening and closing ceremonies (with loads of door prizes), a try - show - tell - and swap event, a Podcaster Panel / Q&A session, a Designer Panel / Q&A session, an Instagram scavenger hunt, and much, much, much, much more.

Who are the teachers and what classes will they be teaching?
We have 4 amazing teachers and 7 wonderfully unique classes. All the details about the teachers and classes can be found by clicking here.

How much does it cost to attend the GPKP?
Prices vary based on whether you will be staying on-site (and which type of room you want) or if you want a non-residential pass. All the details about the cost for the retreat can be found by clicking here.

When is payment due for the retreat?
Upon confirmation of your spot at the retreat, payment in full is due within 48 hours. No refund will be offered if you cancel since the retreat date is so close.

What does the fee I'm paying for the GPKP include?
All meals starting with Thursday night dinner and ending with Sunday morning breakfast, your lodging at a gorgeous retreat centre in Edinburgh, Scotland (unless you are a non-residential attendee), a goodie bag (sewn by Sam!!!!) filled with a multitude of items, a notions pouch (sewn by Sam!), a skein of yarn in an exclusive colourway (dyed by Jess of Ginger Twist Studio), 1 class (you'll have your choice of 1 of 6 available classes) + a bonus class that is open to every retreat attendee, an exclusive set of stitch markers (made by Zena of Little Yellow Uke), 3 patterns (a sock pattern by C.C., a shawl pattern by Sam, and a fair isle mitten pattern by Kirsten), all the events mentioned in the question above, and loads more!

What if I want to take more than 1 class?
There is a spot on your Retreat Application to note if you are interested in extra classes. We will need to make sure each attendee has a spot in their 1 class first and then we will notify you if there is room for you in extra classes. The cost for each extra class is £25.

How do I sign up?
Go to the 2015 Retreat Application to sign up.

What if I or someone I know is interested in vending at the retreat?
While the vendor application for the 2015 retreat is technically closed, we could possibly add another vendor or two to the market. If you're interested in vending, please email us at GeekyPuffinKnitPalooza AT gmail DOT com and we'll see if we can make things work for both your business and our retreat. Thanks!

I have food allergies, dietary concerns, and/or health requirements. Can they be accommodated?
Dietary concerns can be dealt with by the catering staff, but we MUST know in advance so we can advise them of the need. There are some rooms that are accessible, but the classroom for the Saturday classes does not have lift/elevator access (you'll need to make sure to take one of the Friday classes - Short Rows or Intro to Fair Isle if stairs are a problem for you). At least one flight of stairs will need to be climbed to participate in the Saturday classes as well as to get to the bedrooms other than the 1 accessible bedroom. There is a place on the Retreat Application for you to let us know about these things.

I'd like to come early and/or stay longer in Edinburgh. Can I stay at the retreat centre longer?
The retreat centre is happy to accommodate your extended stay as long as they have space available. Please contact us either on your Retreat Application in the Other Information box or via email at GeekyPuffinKnitPalooza AT gmail DOT com so we can get you the information you'll need to deal with this.

I love the GPKP logo. Can I buy merchandise with the logo on it?
Yes! We have set up a Cafe Press shop where you can buy merchandise by clicking here. There will be some GPKP items included in your goodie bag. We also will be contacting retreat attendees in late spring 2015 about other GPKP items that can be ordered for delivery at the retreat.

I have other questions. How can I contact you?
You can send us an email at GeekyPuffinKnitPalooza AT gmail DOT com

Announcing A New Teacher and Class for GPKP!

We're so excited to share our big announcement about the Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza with you today.

How do you feel about social media? Whether you're a business in the fibre world or a consumer wanting to interact with your favourite fibre businesses, the world of social media can be tons of fun but it can also be overwhelming. Don't worry! We're bringing you some help.

The help is coming via the brilliant expertise of Kate from A Playful Day. Kate is the writer, podcaster and creator of A Playful Day, a blog and podcast for creative people, knitters, small business owners, and those seeking inspiration. With a passion for good story telling, Kate also works within the fibre industry with creative businesses developing their brand whether that’s great content, marketing, or copy writing. You can find her as Aplayfulday on Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram, as well as on Ravelry where she is Greentrianglegirl.

And Kate's class will be called: Getting to Grips with Social Media. Here's a little bit about her class: Whether you’re a creative business owner looking to reach a greater audience or a craft addict wanting to interact with your favourite brands, understanding how to get the best out of social media can be tricky. This session aims to help you decide which platform works best for you, providing tips for sharing your news, and tricks for finding what you want to hear about. Get an insight into how the ‘Big Four’ works for both individuals as well as businesses and get an insight into what developing an online community involves. This session will cover some basic (but nifty) uses for: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, + Instagram.

Now you may be saying, "I already signed up for a class I really want to take." No worries friends! Kate's class is going to be open to every retreat attendee in addition to the other class you take. That's right! You're getting a bonus class! And on top of that, Kate is also going to moderate 2 panels - question and answer sessions with your favourite podcasters and your favourite designers. These panels will bookend her Getting to Grips with Social Media class on Saturday afternoon after the Vendor Market ends.

Listen to Kate talk about her class on her podcast at http://www.aplayfulday.com/blog/2015/3/7/episode-77-the-one-with-all-the-travel-project-chat.

We are beyond excited to have Kate joining our Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza team of teachers! Hope you are as well!
xx C.C., Damaris, + Sam
